The short answer: the Big Ass Fans Haiku is one of the most efficient and best-equipped home ceiling fans you can buy, but it starts at about $1,550. It’s worth it if you want occupancy and temperature automation, a very low published noise figure and a big 84-inch option. For most people, the Haiku L (about $850 to $1,000) or a good Hunter DC fan makes more sense.
Note: This is a research-based review. We didn’t install or test a Haiku. Everything here comes from Big Ass Fans’ cut sheets, product pages and warranty document, ENERGY STAR’s certified-fan data, the App Store and retailer listings, checked on October 28, 2026.
Big Ass Fans is based in Lexington, Kentucky, and has been owned by Madison Industries since 2021. It started with huge industrial fans, and the Haiku is its flagship home fan. Our best ceiling fan brands guide compares it with other makers.
Haiku vs Haiku L vs Outdoor vs Coastal
There are five versions, and the differences matter more than the shared name suggests.
| Version | Sizes | Rating | Warranty | Price (bigassfans.com) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku | 52, 60, 84 in. | Indoor (dry) | 5 years | ~$1,550–$2,450 |
| Haiku Outdoor | 52, 60, 84 in. | Damp (covered) | 3 years | ~$1,700–$2,600 |
| Haiku Coastal | 52, 60 in. | Wet, IP56, coastal-rated | 3 years | ~$1,700–$1,950 |
| Haiku L | 44, 52, 60 in. | Indoor (dry) | 5 years | ~$850–$1,000 |
| Haiku L Outdoor | 52 in. | Wet | 3 years | ~$1,000–$1,100 |
Prices are list prices without a light on October 28, 2026 (the Haiku L includes its light). They vary by finish and change often. The Haiku downlight adds about $280.
Big Ass Fans Haiku
The original Haiku has three aircraft-grade aluminum or Moso bamboo airfoils, a brushless DC/EC motor with 7 speeds, and built-in SenseME motion and temperature sensors. It comes in two mounts:
- Low Profile: flat ceilings of 8 to 10 feet (not available on the 84-inch).
- Universal: flat or sloped ceilings from 9 to 14+ feet, up to a 33-degree slope, with a 12-inch downrod included.
Bamboo airfoils are for indoor, dry rooms only.

Big Ass Fans Haiku L
The Haiku L is the cheaper model. It has three hybrid resin airfoils, a brushless EC motor (7 speeds per Costco and Amazon listings) and an integrated LED. It uses a universal mount for flat or sloped ceilings of 8 feet or more, with a 5-inch downrod included. Finishes are matte black, glossy white, and caramel or cocoa wood-look.
There are no sensors on its cut sheet. Its features are Sleep mode, Fan Eco and 16 light levels. Watch the SKU: the Wi-Fi module is optional, and non-Wi-Fi versions exist. Big Ass Fans sells the Wi-Fi ones on its own site.

Haiku Outdoor, Haiku Coastal and Haiku L Outdoor
- Haiku Outdoor: damp-rated for covered spaces. Big Ass Fans requires fixed cover extending at least 2 feet past the blade tips and a stabilizer, and says to install it at least 50 miles inland, away from salt air.
- Haiku Coastal: the one for the beach. It’s wet-rated with IP56 protection, resin airfoils and corrosion-resistant hardware. Its separate warranty still covers finish for just one year and excludes corrosion damage.
- Haiku L Outdoor: a 52-inch wet-rated fan with the same 50-mile inland rule.

Airflow and power by size
These are Big Ass Fans’ cut-sheet figures at maximum speed, with ENERGY STAR’s weighted efficiency alongside.
| Fan and size | Mount | Max airflow | Max power | ENERGY STAR CFM/W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 52 in. | Low profile | 5,172 CFM | 14.7 W | 302 (Most Efficient) |
| Haiku 52 in. | Universal | 6,106 CFM | 18.8 W | 278 (Most Efficient) |
| Haiku 60 in. | Low profile | 6,420 CFM | 17.8 W | 328 (Most Efficient) |
| Haiku 60 in. | Universal | 7,803 CFM | 24.5 W | 282 |
| Haiku 84 in. | Universal | 17,031 CFM | 41.9 W | 378 |
| Haiku Outdoor 84 in. | Universal | 17,369 CFM | 42.3 W | 387 (Most Efficient) |
| Haiku L 44 in. | Universal | 4,662 CFM | 19.3 W | 242 |
| Haiku L 52 in. | Universal | 5,204 CFM | 20.3 W* | 269 |
| Haiku L 60 in. | Universal | 6,553 CFM | 15.8 W | 219 |
| Haiku Coastal 52 in. | Universal | Not published | 26.7 W (ENERGY STAR) | 245 |
Haiku rows are aluminum airfoils. *ENERGY STAR lists the Haiku L 52 at 33.5 W on high, not the 20.3 W on the cut sheet. We couldn’t resolve the gap.
Big Ass Fans says sizes suit rooms of up to 225 sq ft (52 inches), 400 sq ft (60 inches) and 900 sq ft (84 inches); the 44-inch Haiku L is for up to 100 sq ft. Check your room with our ceiling fan size calculator.
How efficient is the EC motor?
Very, on paper. Big Ass Fans says the Haiku draws as little as 2.4 W on low. Several Haiku configurations make ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient list, and the 84-inch Haiku Outdoor rates 387 CFM per watt.
Two cautions:
- Weighted vs max-speed figures. ENERGY STAR’s CFM/W is a weighted average across speeds, while the cut sheet gives max speed only. The Haiku L 60 works out to about 415 CFM/W at max speed but rates just 219 with ENERGY STAR. Compare ENERGY STAR numbers with ENERGY STAR numbers.
- The Haiku L isn’t the efficiency champ. At 219 to 269 CFM/W, it rates below the Haiku and below some much cheaper DC fans. The Hunter Embrook, for example, rates 312.3.
Our AC vs DC ceiling fans guide explains why EC/DC motors use so much less power.
Sensors and Whoosh
The Haiku’s SenseME sensors are its standout feature. Big Ass Fans says the built-in temperature and motion sensors “respond to conditions and occupancy,” so the fan can adjust speed or switch off when a room empties. Humidity sensing isn’t listed. The Haiku L has no sensors on its cut sheet.
Whoosh mode, which mimics a natural breeze, is confirmed for the Haiku L on Big Ass Fans’ Haiku L Outdoor page and in Costco’s and Amazon’s listings. We couldn’t find it on the Haiku page or cut sheet.
Light options
- Haiku: no light, a 1,770-lumen LED downlight with 16 dimming levels (about $280), or a Chromatic Uplight on indoor universal-mount fans only. If you want both on a 52- or 60-inch, it has to be universal mount. Damp-rated Haiku fans can’t take the uplight.
- Haiku L: an integrated LED at 2700K with a CRI of 90 and 16 dimming levels. Big Ass Fans doesn’t give lumens for the indoor model. The Haiku L Outdoor page says “up to 1,361 lumens.”
Noise: the under-35 dBA claim
The Haiku cut sheet lists under 35 dBA at max speed for every size and mount, and the Haiku L cut sheet says the same. That’s a manufacturer claim. It gives no test method or measuring distance, and a footnote says field results may vary with reflective surfaces and room conditions. The warranty also excludes “normal operating noise.”
We found no Wirecutter or Consumer Reports review of the Haiku. Australia’s CHOICE lists Haiku models, but its ratings are for members only. Still, few fan makers publish any decibel figure; Hunter, for one, publishes none. See our quietest ceiling fans roundup for how we weigh noise evidence.
Smart home and the app
The Haiku works with Apple HomeKit through Matter, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and ecobee. You can control it by app, voice, the included Bluetooth remote or an optional Bluetooth wall control.
- Matter came to Big Ass Fans’ Wi-Fi fans in October 2024 (app 3.3.0, firmware 3.3.1). Some older units may not get it, depending on when they were bought.
- Haiku L: the indoor page lists Alexa and Google; Matter and HomeKit appear only on the Haiku L Outdoor page. Its included remote is infrared, and app or voice control needs the Wi-Fi module.
- App rating: the Big Ass Fans iOS app averaged 4.87 out of 5 from 2,211 ratings on October 28, 2026.
Warranty: read this before you buy
Big Ass Fans’ current US warranty (the Small Overhead Fans Warranty dated 11/17/25) gives:
- 5 years: indoor Haiku and Haiku L fans.
- 3 years: damp-rated Haiku and wet-rated Haiku L fans.
- 1 year: surface-finish defects.
- 30 days: refurbished units get a functional guarantee only.
The catch: it covers only fans bought directly from Big Ass Fans or an authorized dealer. Coverage follows the fan only while it stays at its original install site. Big Ass Fans ships the repaired or replacement fan free, but you pay for removal, reinstallation and shipping it back. Big Ass Fans reimburses a standard $100 where the law requires an electrician. Salt water and other corrosive elements are excluded.
Important: Amazon and other marketplaces show Haiku listings, but we couldn’t confirm whether those sellers are authorized. A fan from an unauthorized third-party seller may not be covered at all. Check the seller, or buy direct.
Unlike Hunter’s limited lifetime motor coverage, there’s no lifetime term anywhere in the document.
Important: turn off power at the breaker before any install, use a fan-rated box or mount to the structure, follow the manual and local code, and hire a licensed electrician if you’re unsure.
Where to buy
- bigassfans.com: the whole range, and the safest bet for the warranty.
- Costco.com: sells a Haiku L 52-inch (item 2071674), described as “Indoor or Outdoor Functionality” and online only.
- Amazon: has Haiku and Haiku L listings, with seller status unverified.
Who the Haiku is worth it for
In our view, the Haiku earns its price if you:
- want a fan that reacts to occupancy and temperature on its own,
- care most about noise and want a fan with a published sub-35 dBA claim,
- need an 84-inch fan that moves over 17,000 CFM on about 42 W for a great room,
- want Matter, Alexa, Google and ecobee from one well-rated app.
We’d skip it if you just want a quiet, efficient fan. The Hunter Gravity 60 (around $500, with HunterSMART Wi-Fi) and the remote-only Hunter Embrook (under $200) are both on ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient list at about 312 CFM per watt, with lifetime motor warranties. See our best Hunter ceiling fans and best smart ceiling fans guides.
Our verdict
The Haiku is the best-documented premium fan we’ve researched. It has published airflow and wattage for every size, top ENERGY STAR ratings, real sensors and a published noise figure (though with no test method). Our pick, if the budget is there, is the Haiku sized to your room, with the mount that matches your ceiling height.
The Haiku L is a fine fan, but it has no sensors and middling ENERGY STAR figures. We’d only choose it if you want the Big Ass Fans app and the warm, high-CRI light. Whichever you choose, buy from Big Ass Fans or an authorized dealer so the 5-year warranty applies.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Big Ass Fans Haiku worth the money?

What's the difference between the Haiku and the Haiku L?
The Haiku costs about $1,550 and up, comes in 52, 60 and 84 inches, and has built-in motion and temperature sensors. The Haiku L costs about $850 to $1,000, comes in 44, 52 and 60 inches, has hybrid resin blades and an integrated 2700K light, and has no sensors listed.
How long is the Big Ass Fans Haiku warranty?
Big Ass Fans' current US warranty (dated 11/17/25) gives 5 years on indoor Haiku and Haiku L fans, 3 years on damp- and wet-rated models and 1 year on surface finish. It only applies to fans bought from Big Ass Fans or an authorized dealer.
How quiet is the Haiku fan?
Big Ass Fans' cut sheet lists under 35 dBA at max speed for every Haiku size, and the same for the Haiku L. It doesn't give a test method or distance, and we found no independent measurement.
Does the Haiku work with Apple Home?
Yes. The Haiku works with Apple HomeKit through Matter, plus Alexa, Google Home and ecobee. Matter over Wi-Fi arrived in October 2024, though some older units may not get it.
Can you buy a Big Ass Fans Haiku at Costco?
Costco.com listed a Haiku L 52-inch as an online-only item in October 2026. Check that the seller is Big Ass Fans or an authorized dealer before you buy, because the warranty depends on it.
